Our family mutt is just way too big to knit for; at 90 lbs it would take as long to knit him a sweater as it would to knit one for a human!
But I realized the other day that in his position as the Cocoknits Security Department he deserved something knitted! So I used Leigh Radford’s shibori felting technique to make him a “studded” collar. He looks thrilled, don’t you think?
Skills Needed
General knitting knowledge.
Size
Small (medium, large, x-large)
For neck size: 11–14" (14–18", 19–22", 23–26")
Materials
Yarn
Small amount (1/3 skein) feltable bulky or worsted weight used doubled. Small amounts of cc. Sample shown in Brown Sheep Naturespun worsted used doubled and Cascade EcoWool used doubled (for dimples).
Notions
One ¾ (1, 1¼, 1½)" buckle and D-ring. (You can cut apart an old collar and use the buckle and D-ring if they are still in good shape.)
Small grommets or eyelets (optional, but makes the collar sturdier).
You will need 7–12 small Scunci brand silicone rubber bands (usually used for hair) to make dimples. (I must admit, I use my daughter’s leftover rubber bands for her braces… they work perfectly for this!)
Needles
#13, any type.
Gauge
Not important for felting.
